Art or Architecture?
Since I found my passion for art, I’ve always wanted something more. Sometimes, that has been a really good thing in an artistic sense. Other times, it has a negative impact on my process because I can never be fully satisfied with my work. I’ve realized on a larger scale that “something more” I was looking for is architecture. If I could write a book about what I love to do, it would be “The Art of Architecture // The Architecture of Art.” I’ve found that much of the architecture world is about art, and I use architectural principles in each piece of art I create. The possibilities for how these fields intertwine seem endless.
I decided to pursue a concentration in Design Thinking in college, a branch off the architecture-major tree trunk. I discovered that one of the ways to keep my passion for the visual arts alive while in architecture school was to explore a broader range of design using architectural principles. I know that I’m looking for a way to combine my passions for art and architecture and seeking a place where I can apply design thinking methods to my work. I never want to let go of what I love in creating art. Pursuing architecture has encouraged me to look at the world through a wider design lens which I have truly enjoyed, but I don’t want it to replace pursuing art.
Right now, I’d love to see the possibilities that interior design brings because I love working with color and textures in a wide range of media. Perhaps this is the best way for me to combine both my passions. I don’t have a specific vision for my career path, but I’ve realized that’s okay. Maybe I’ll find a job in interior design that I love, or maybe I won’t, but I’ll always come back to my art because that was my first love.
So, art or architecture? I’ll always say: why not both?
Disclaimer: The original title for this post was “Art-chitecture” which my husband came up with, but we decided that was too hard to say.
